Obtaining a UK Residence Permit for Foreign Nationals
A UK residence permit is permission for long-term stay in the country, which in official British terminology is usually referred to as leave to remain or permission to stay, and in digital format is confirmed through an eVisa. It is granted on the basis of a residence visa that allows a person to enter the country and remain there for more than 6 months, work legally, and exercise a number of rights, including access to social assistance. A residence permit is an intermediate stage between temporary stay and obtaining permanent residence, and subsequently citizenship. UK residents have the opportunity to live in a highly developed country with a rich history and one of the world’s leading economies, a high-quality education and healthcare system, and favorable conditions for doing business.
A residence permit can be obtained on several grounds, including employment, university study, family reunification, entrepreneurship, and others. The key requirements for obtaining UK residence include having no problems with the law, having health insurance and sufficient income for self-support, and knowledge of English. Each type of residence permit has its own conditions and allows the holder to stay in the country for a different period: usually from 6 months to 5 years, while under certain study routes for children the period may be as long as 6 years. In many cases, UK residence is the first step toward permanent residence and subsequent naturalization, provided that all immigration requirements are met.
A UK residence permit gives foreign nationals more opportunities than a trip on a tourist visa. Resident status provides stability and security, allowing a person to integrate into society, make long-term plans, and in the future apply for a strong passport. A residence permit provides the right to long-term residence in the country and other benefits, including:

In 2024–2026, UK immigration rules were substantially updated. The transition from biometric BRP cards to digital eVisas began in 2024, and proof of immigration status is now gradually being transferred to electronic format, which is intended to simplify interaction with the system and improve data security. At the same time, visa and immigration fees were increased, while salary requirements under the Skilled Worker route were tightened: from 4 April 2024, the general minimum threshold rose from approximately EUR 30,263 to EUR 44,701 per year, and under the current rules the standard requirement is usually around EUR 48,166 per year or the going rate for the specific occupation, if higher.
The key requirements for applicants planning to obtain a residence permit remain standard:
It is also necessary to provide documentary evidence of the purpose of immigration to the United Kingdom. Below is more detail on the residence routes available to foreign nationals in 2026.
The United Kingdom offers 2 types of student permission to stay: the Child Student visa for children aged 4 to 17 and the Student visa for applicants aged 16 and over. The main conditions are admission to a local educational institution, sufficient financial means, parental consent for a minor child, and English language proficiency. The validity of the residence permit corresponds to the duration of the course, but no more than 5 or 6 years depending on the type of visa. After completing studies on a Student visa, it is possible to obtain a Graduate visa, which allows a person to remain in the country for 2 years, or for 3 years after a doctoral program.
To live in the United Kingdom with a family member who holds UK residence status, it is necessary to obtain a Family visa. Spouses or partners, a fiancé or fiancée, children, parents, and other relatives who will provide care to the resident may apply. The applicant must meet the minimum combined income requirement (from EUR 33,400 per year for a couple), have health insurance, prove the family relationship, and demonstrate language knowledge. The visa is valid for up to 2 years and 9 months. Permission for family members can be extended for another 2.5 years.
If you plan to marry or register a partnership with a British citizen but do not intend to live in the country, you can obtain a special Marriage Visitor visa. The permission is issued for 6 months and cannot be extended. After the marriage, it is possible to switch to the partner route, and when extended, a partner visa is usually granted for another 2 years and 6 months.
The conditions for obtaining residence include evidence of wedding plans (booking confirmation, payment of expenses related to the marriage, and other evidence). If you plan to live in the United Kingdom, you must obtain residence under the family reunification route, while for partners who are not officially married, the relationship must have lasted at least 2 years at the time of application.
The United Kingdom offers more than 20 residence routes for work depending on the type of employment, duration of stay in the country, qualifications, and origin. Many sponsored routes require a job offer from a Home Office-approved employer, a Certificate of Sponsorship, the required salary level, and English language proficiency. Some categories are also available without a job offer. The validity of the status depends on the visa type and may range from 18 months to 5 years or more, with the possibility of extension under certain routes.
The Innovator Founder visa is a residence route available to founders of innovative companies. The business idea must be approved by an authorized UK organization, for example under the Global Entrepreneurs Programme (GEP). Other requirements include knowledge of the state language and the ability to support oneself financially (at least EUR 1,463 held in an account for 28 days before applying). Business investment funds are not counted as money for the applicant’s personal maintenance. The visa is valid for 3 years, and evidence of business progress must be provided after 12 and 24 months. The permission can be extended repeatedly for the same period.
A residence permit may be obtained for employment with an employer approved by the UK government. To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, the applicant must earn at least EUR 48,040 per year. In certain cases, a lower salary may be permitted, for example if the occupation is included on the immigration salary list, if the applicant qualifies as a new entrant, or has a relevant PhD.
A foreign national must know English, have an employment contract, and hold a “Certificate of Sponsorship” (CoS, certificate of sponsorship) in the form of an electronic record issued by the employer. In addition, the visa is issued only for certain eligible jobs (for example, doctors, teachers, office managers, and others). The permission is valid for up to 5 years and may be extended. After 5 years of residence in the country on this basis, the applicant may become eligible to apply for permanent residence.
In general, the procedure for obtaining UK residence is similar for all categories of applicants. Differences exist only in the list of supporting documents, application processing times, and the amount of the application fee. Obtaining a residence permit consists of several main stages:
Given the complexity and changes in immigration law, as well as the wide range of visa permissions in the United Kingdom, it is advisable to seek assistance with legalization of status from international law specialists. Lawyers can help choose the most suitable relocation strategy for Europe, ensure the application file is prepared correctly, and significantly save your time.
The success of the application and the time required to obtain residence largely depend on a properly prepared file. In addition to evidence confirming the immigration basis, the list of documents for obtaining a residence visa includes:
Depending on the immigration basis, birth certificates and parental consent for minors, proof of relationship for dependants, a criminal record certificate for certain professions, and an ATAS certificate for certain study and research areas may also be required. Documents issued in a language other than English or Welsh must be translated and certified.
The cost of obtaining a residence permit depends on the chosen immigration route and the applicant’s citizenship. The standard application processing period is 3 or 8 weeks if the application is made from outside the United Kingdom. For a partner/spouse family visa, a decision is usually made within 12 weeks when applying from abroad and within 8 weeks when applying from inside the United Kingdom.
It should be taken into account that the application processing time may be extended if the file is incomplete. The table below shows the main costs of obtaining a UK residence permit.
| Expense item | Minimum cost, € |
| Residence visa | from 373 |
| Healthcare surcharge (per year) | from 894 |
| Tuberculosis test | 225 and 116 for children under 11 |
| Residence permit extension | from 373 |
| Certified translation of documents | 23 |
In some cases, applicants can use priority or super priority processing services, with applications considered within 1–5 working days, at a cost of EUR 576 or EUR 1,152 respectively. For a family visa submitted from outside the United Kingdom, accelerated processing usually takes up to 30 working days.
When planning to immigrate to the United Kingdom, it is also worth reviewing the cost of living before moving. For example, renting a one-bedroom apartment will cost at least EUR 950 per month, while estimated expenses for one person are around EUR 953.
The right to long-term residence (ILR, Indefinite Leave to Remain) is available in most cases after 5 years of residence in the United Kingdom. The permitted time outside the country is 180 days in any 12-month period. The conditions for extending residence status and obtaining permanent residence differ depending on the immigration basis. Applicants aged 18 to 64 must pass the “Life in the UK” test about life in the United Kingdom and confirm English language proficiency. Permanent resident status is indefinite and may be revoked if the person remains abroad for 2 years or more continuously.
One year after obtaining ILR (or immediately for spouses and civil partners of UK citizens), a person may be eligible to apply for citizenship by naturalization. To obtain the status, the applicant must meet conditions similar to those for permanent residence, including the residence period and compliance with the law. UK citizens have access to the fullest range of rights and privileges, including protection from deportation, participation in elections, and the ability to hold public office.
Obtaining temporary residence in the United Kingdom is a legally complex process, so without the assistance of immigration specialists, not every applicant succeeds in obtaining approval on the first attempt. Refusal is often connected with accidental mistakes or failure to comply with legal requirements. The most common reasons for refusal of residence permission include:
If your application is refused, the reasons for refusal and possible ways to challenge the decision will be set out in an electronic or paper letter. In some cases, an administrative review can be requested within 28 days after receiving an unfavorable decision. Other options include an appeal to the court or submitting a new residence application.
In any of these situations, it is important to obtain support from immigration specialists who can assess the prospects of an appeal and take the most appropriate steps to resolve the situation effectively.

When considering the advantages and disadvantages of moving to the United Kingdom, residence permit holders most often share positive feedback about the quality of life and opportunities for personal and professional development. Negative experiences are often associated with the complexity of legalizing status and obstacles caused by increasingly strict requirements for residence applicants. That is why it is very important to prepare thoroughly for the move, collect a complete set of documents in accordance with the immigration basis, and obtain support from specialists.
After obtaining residence status, most foreign nationals encounter typical adaptation challenges: finding housing, registering with healthcare and tax systems, and enrolling children in schools. However, thanks to the multicultural environment and state support for immigrants, integration is relatively easy, especially for those who have a good command of English.
Business owners in the United Kingdom note the ease of company registration, while employees point to high salaries (an average of EUR 3,748 per month) and career opportunities. The country also attracts students seeking a prestigious diploma that is valued worldwide and increases the chances of obtaining a well-paid job. For many, obtaining residence permission becomes an important step toward permanent residency, as well as a promising and stable future in a highly developed country.
The United Kingdom remains a popular immigration destination, as confirmed by 1.16 million residence permissions for work, study, or family reunification issued in 2024. At the same time, the large inflow of foreign nationals affects the tightening of requirements for residence applicants. This encourages people to look for more accessible routes for legalizing their status. An alternative immigration option is obtaining European citizenship through repatriation in Romania, Bulgaria, or Slovenia. Programs in these countries make it possible to avoid the lengthy procedure of obtaining and extending residence permits.
An EU passport under a simplified program can be obtained within 4 months with the assistance of international law specialists familiar with the nuances of the legislation of different countries. Selecting the optimal immigration route, careful preparation, control at every stage of the process, and professional experience make it possible to become a citizen of the European Union with the right to travel, work, and live freely in EU countries, as well as enjoy privileges in the United Kingdom.
